Puppet Show Script: John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus

Characters:

• John the Baptist: A strong, weathered man, dressed in simple robes made of camel hair. He carries a wooden cross and a bowl of water. His voice is deep and resonant.
• Jesus: A calm, serene figure, also in simple robes. His demeanor is peaceful and accepting.

Setting:

The banks of the Jordan River. Simple scenery can depict reeds, rocks, and perhaps a glimpse of the flowing water.

Scene 1:

(Narrator, if used): The word of God spread throughout the land. A prophet arose, a voice crying in the wilderness… John the Baptist!

(John the Baptist, standing near the river, addressing the crowd – which can be represented by a few smaller puppets): Repent! The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand! Turn away from your sins and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins!

(Several people approach the river, one by one, and John baptizes them, symbolically dipping them in the water.)

Scene 2:

(Jesus approaches John. The crowd parts slightly.)

Jesus: John, I wish to be baptized by you.

John the Baptist: (Surprised) Lord, I should be baptized by you! Why do you come to me?

Jesus: It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.

(John hesitates, then nods. He begins to baptize Jesus, gently pouring water over his head. A spotlight or other visual effect could emphasize this moment.)

(Narrator, if used): And as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Scene 3:

(John the Baptist, looking towards the heavens, his face filled with awe): I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove, and it remained on him. I testify that this is the Son of God!

(Jesus stands quietly, his expression serene. The crowd murmurs in wonder.)

(Narrator, if used): And so, Jesus began his ministry, spreading the message of love, forgiveness, and the Kingdom of God.
