Lydia is a high school senior who is trying to break free from pre concieved notions that people have placed on her due to her learning challenges. She has her sights set on college and wants to prove people wrong. For a long time, people have believed she should be in lower level classes. Her senior year is the first, real time she is in all general ed classes with the exception of a resource support class and a math class. She feels out of place, but is determined to succeed and get to where she wants to be - college. Throughout act one, we see Lydia struggle with fitting into her classes, while also trying to uphold her social life with her two best friends. We see her break down and get frustrated in tutoring and in therapy, as well as with friends and family. We also witness her teachers expressing their frustrations with Lydia. At the end of act one, Lydia is found in her high school english class, awaiting a final exam result before winter break. Her teacher passes out the exams and when the teacher gets to Lydia, the teacher stops and shakes her head as she slaps the test down on the desk to reveal a big, fat, F. As the rest of her class compares their grades, Lydia's mind is revving up with intense frustration. Why can't she succeed just like her friends and classmates? She wants to go to college! Thoughts like "you suck", "why can't you succeed" pulse through her head. As the bell rings at the end of the period, the classroom empties except for Lydia. She stands up and screams internally, with clenched fists. This leads into an intense and angsty/angry act one finale that incorperates her thoughts with tap dancing. One at a time, a "thought"/"feeling" is presented in the form of a chorus member. For example: "You suck.", a dancer will come onstage and start dancing and then will quickly stop. Lydia will respond with dancing. Once all five thoughts/feelings are onstage, the rest of the chorus joins them. This musical tap number is a dance battle, meaning that the thoughts/feelings dancers and chorus will have a different set of choreography than Lydia, but it will sound cohesive. The end of the number is insanity and the dancing is super loud and intense to showcase the feelings Lydia is feeling about not being able to succeed in the way she wants to/the burning passion she has to go and prove people wrong. This number has a little music at the very beginning, but is mostly acapella, just the sounds of the tap dancing. Audiences will realize that Act 2 will be all focused on finding out if Lydia makes it to college, so the number needs to end with a cliffhanger. Immediately at the end of the number, the curtain goes down to immediately begin a 15 minute intermission. Act two opens with Lydia refreshed and rejuvinated to take on her last semester. This act is way more positive, focused on making decisions for where Lydia will actually go to schoo/live/etc. We have the emotion of saying goodbye to her family and friends combined with her realizing her hard work. The show culminates in a huge graduation scene with Lydia making the student speech and everyone celebrating.
